The open position has comprehensive responsibilities for managing materials projects related to home appliances products from a technology and business perspective (New Product Introductions, Regulatory, Cost, Quality, and Innovation). The position requires to work in close cooperation with functions like: Platforms, Procurement, Manufacturing, Sustainability and Consumer design) and to keep teaming relations with counterparts located in different Plants and Regions. Work as team member to manage activities and projects where materials (plastic, metal, foam and  coating) application is required . Share inside the company the specific knowledge and competences about the plastic/resin materials, metal, foam and  coating . Investigate, select, define and analyze new material opportunities to be implemented in Whirlpool products to address new features implementation, quality improvements, cost reduction, regulatory and model line.
 
Responsibilities

  • Manage materials development projects working with cross functional teams (Platforms, Procurement, Manufacturing, Sustainability, Suppliers and Consumer design) to deliver the projects within scope, schedule and cost
  • Drive material specification definition, critical parameters, test plans with timeline and provide technical leadership to project teams
  • Lead short/medium term (< two years)  material solution development projects
  • Review, interpret, and react to data in order to drive product development progression
  • Assess risk management and proactively engage the team in order to mitigate any risk associated with the project
  • Develop test methods, coordinate the implementation of experiments, evaluate test results, and prepare written reports of research findings relative to materials selection investigations working with laboratory and design teams.
  • Lead/Support platforms & plants in their day to day materials technology related activities
  • Lead or support materials engineering tasks in new product development projects
  • Lead or support quality projects implementation and resolve quality issues at the plant
  • Lead or support cost savings projects implementation and  pipeline generation
  • Lead or support dual sourcing strategy execution working with procurement, platform and plant
  • Identify opportunities for new technologies and/or improvements to existing technologies early on the product development stage
  • Travel domestic or internationally to support business needs up to 20%

 
 
Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree  in Materials, Chemistry, Metallurgy or Mechanical Engineering
  • 2 to 5 years of experience in project management in new product development
  • Experience in selecting and evaluating engineering materials in one or more of the following areas – polymers, coatings, steel and adhesives.
  • Knowledge in manufacturing and application of common engineering materials.
  • Experience in materials failure analysis, CAD, and Google Workspace.

 
Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Metallurgy or Mechanical Engineering
  • Lean OPEX proficiency and mindset
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong competency in metals and polymers.
  • Strong technical understanding of but not limited to processing of thermoplastics, including injection molding, thermoforming and extrusion.
  • Understanding of the industrial processes and technology inference spaces.
  • Knowledge of testing methods, e.g. laboratory operation knowledge and test practice.
  • Good understanding of Six Sigma tools and DOE (Design of Experiments) is desirable.
  • The candidate has to be self motivated, able to effectively work in a team as well as being an individual contributor.
  • Fluent English and great communication skills, sense of urgency and capability to work under pressure for multiple tasks.
