Function Overview:

 

Whirlpool is looking for a Thermal Science Lead Engineer to join our Cooking Team at the Edgewater Tech Center.  This role will apply the theory and practical application of sciences including heat transfer, fluid mechanics, mass transfer, and thermodynamics related to the thermal and energy systems of Free Standing Ranges.  Position responsibilities will include delivering solutions to difficult ventilation and cooling technical challenges, creating and maintaining knowledge databases, and governance of technical rigor on global programs and participation in external partnerships with universities, institutions, and suppliers.  As a key member of the Subsystem Engineering team, you will contribute to the technical strategy development and teach and guide technical talent to ensure consistency in technical output.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Using mathematics and physics for problem solving, component, subsystem and system design in the domain of thermal science
  • Ability to translate component and system behaviour into physics
  • Analytical and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling
  • Generate and use empirical data for problem solving, component, subsystem and system design in the domain of thermal science
  • Think strategically with strong analytical skills and the ability to connect disparate data sources into a straightforward insightful story
  • Team well with others in a collaborative environment
  • Create and manage knowledge documents, DVP&R, Functional Stack-ups, FMEA
  • Adapt to a changing environment and the ability to manage multiple activities concurrently
  • Understand and predict the effects of variation on thermal properties.
  • Take organizational needs and translate into a cadenced roadmap plan
  • Drive results through others by coaching and teaching capabilities
  • Create Natural Followership and seek out aspiring technical experts for training and mentorship
  • Develop new and better test methods to enhance the VOC (Voice of Customer) to VOE (Voice of Engineering) translation. Develops methods and documents for reuse.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years working in product development utilizing thermal science in component, subsystem and system design

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering including academic experience modeling thermal systems
  • Knowledge and experience with consumer products industry
  • Project management
  • Basic understanding of system engineering and model based system engineering
  • Basic understanding and application of analytical modeling software (Dymola, Mathcad, Matlab/Simulink)
  • Opex or Six Sigma Black Belt
