Electronic Controls Engineering Tech, Failure Analysis


The Engineering Tech is an experienced problem solver located at our Cleveland manufacturing plant whose primary purpose is to diagnose appliance failures in the plant to enable root cause identification , drive 8D corrective actions, support product tear down and appliance diagnostic workshops, generate and communicate lessons learned reports to engineering, quality, manufacturing and service. The Engineering Tech  must be able to work independently or as part of a team, mentor junior technicians. Minimal  travel  to various locations such as; Whirlpool Corporate, Suppliers, Manufacturing plants, or Whirlpool’s Warranty Analysis Lab as required.

Your responsibilities will include

Failure analysis team performs failure analysis of appliances and appliance components from manufacturing process failures on the line test equipment, offline- working with a repair bay, or in lab settings to determine root cause and documents analysis reports.  The team members generate 8D’s (problem solving) to drive corrective actions,  translate key learning’s from analysis into manufacturing  process improvements, and provide feedback into design and design for manufacturability criteria


Typical Duties

  • Performs analysis of Production Line failures

  • Supports daily Production & Repair activities

  • Reviews/compiles Production data to identify gaps in Manufacturing process

  • Supports Quality/Process engineers to improve Manufacturing methods

Minimum requirements

  • Associate Degree in electronics/electrical engineering technology

  • 5+ years of experience in electronics Diagnostics, control boards & electro-mechanical components 

  • Standard IT toolset expertise (spreadsheets, word documents, data systems entry, analytics, etc)

Preferred skills and experiences

  • Structured Problem Solving Experience (8D, 5-Why)

  • Manufacturing process knowledge & experience

    • Control Plans

    • PFMEAs

    • Data driven process control

  • Bench test experience, component testing. 

  • Basic HW/SW and Mechanical design experience 

  • Electronic component/Valves/Motors/Pump experience
