Function Overview:


As a Senior Sustainability Engineer you will be responsible for playing a critical role to execute on Whirlpool’s Sustainability goals, supporting the Design for Environment (DfE) and Circular Economy (CE) programs. This includes working closely with internal and external partners to develop and execute short and long term strategies and initiatives to address environmental and sustainability topics such as greenhouse gas reduction,  sustainable packaging, resources efficiency. In this role you will develop global environmental and sustainability policies and standards to make meaningful contributions to our global sustainability strategy progress.


This position reports to the Global Design for Environment Senior Manager and will work with global extended cross functional team members from the Global Product Organization, Global Strategic Sourcing and marketing.



  • Orchestrate the holistic integration of Voice of Sustainability into the Advanced Development and Product Development Process including; the development of metrics, collection of data, and usage of tools and systems to inform process partners and measure/report progress 
  • Execute on Whirlpool’s Sustainability goals, specifically supporting the Design for Environment (DfE) and Circular Economy (CE) programs
  • Support the execution of multiple material/chemical phase-down/out strategies, working closely with the Global Product Organization, Procurement, Marketing, and Manufacturing 
  • Support the deployment and execution of the Full Materials Disclosure program by way of a global system and process including identification of opportunities and pathways to leverage data for proactive design, scoping, and agility 
  • Act as a Sustainability champion, SME, and advocate across the organization, at all levels
  • Deliver and expand our design for environment playbook and specifications within our product development process
  • Engage with suppliers on new material alternatives and opportunities, including packaging
  • Additional responsibilities may be requested to achieve business objectives.



Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering technology or Environmental science
  • 5+ years of experience in Environmental & Sustainability practices and product development.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master’s Degree 
  • Proven success managing multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Prioritizing and balancing short-term objectives with long-term strategy
  • Cross-regional and functional project management and teaming 
  • Ability to Influence and drive change management in the organization
  • Data analytics and comfort working with tools and systems
  • Systems thinking and process oriented, continuous improvement mindset 
  • Distilling complicated concepts to action items based on stakeholder needs
  • Ability to define, track, and report success metrics across organization including top level management
  • Strong communication and Organizational Change Management skills
  • Experience performing or overseeing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) 
  • Passion for sustainability, sustainable business, and making life better 
  • The ability to communicate effectively with people at various levels including Engineering and senior management. 
  • The ability to work well with and develop a partnering relationship with other team members and external.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Prioritization assessment, anticipation and ability to determine a course of action
