This role in summary

Whirlpool is seeking qualified candidates for a Senior Model-Based Design Engineer in Benton Harbor, Michigan in the Control Systems Department for Electronics and Electrical Systems Organization. This position will report to a senior manager and will be responsible to design and deliver algorithms using simulation-based techniques across multiple platforms.

 

Your responsibilities will include 

  • Work with engineers in the team to develop standard documentation for the algorithm architecture using Systems Modeling Language (SysML) diagrams as applicable for every new project/algorithm Collaborate with a cross-functional team for inputs
  • Assist in decomposing system-level requirements to Model and Software requirements using closed-loop simulation capabilities with plant models and/or with experimental analysis using products.
  • Experience with modeling and tuning digital controllers in multiple applications. Can model and develop logic using complex controls: Multiple Inputs - Multiple Outputs (MIMO), Single Input-Single Output (SISO), state-space representation, classical and modern control theory, machine learning-based algorithms, and advanced estimators
  • Develop algorithms and test implementations using Matlab/Simulink.  Use a model-based development approach that utilizes both graphical and scripting development methods
  • Design digital filters to perform signal conditioning of various sensors in different applications.
  • Confident about C programming and embedded software 
  • Generate C code from models using auto-code generation tools and configuration
  • Test/debug algorithms using models and embedded code with the system hardware 
  • Run experimental activities in the lab (instrumentation, test, and data acquisition) to validate the algorithm’s capability and robustness
  • Be able to assist the team to create automation in the simulation and code generation domains. Using automation techniques in Python, C, or Matlab scripts
  • Work closely with firmware engineers, system integrators, and product platform engineers to ensure algorithms meet the customers’ and products’ needs and requirements 
  • Collaborating with cross-functional and cross-regional teams

 

Minimum requirements

  • Masters Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering with a focus on controls systems
  • 5+ years professional experience in Control Design for different applications, including Algorithm Design, Simulation, and Verification and Validation
  • 2+ years’ experience in the area of controls algorithm development using Matlab/Simulink
  • 1+ years’ experience in Embedded software 
  • 2+ years’ experience with Experimental Analysis applied to control systems; experiment planning, Design of Experiments (DOEs), Instrumentation, Data acquisition, experimental uncertainty analysis, etc..

 

Preferred skills and experiences

  • Ph.D. in Control Systems
  • 2+ years user of Simulink applied to Model-Based Control Design, V Process from Design to Verification and Validation, Model in the Loop, Rapid Control Prototyping Systems, Hardware in the Loop
  • System Modeling Languages: UML, SysML
  • Programming Languages: advanced C/C++, Python, Javascript, Java, etc.
  • Experience with Advanced Controls Design and Estimators; Machine learning, Neural Networks, Deep learning, Kalman filter, Model Predictive Control, Parameter Estimation, Advanced Estimators, etc...
  • Development of plant models with Modelica language and interface of Modelica models with Simulink
  • Experience in rapid prototyping techniques to validate controls; National Instruments Veristand, Labview), dSPACE systems, SpeedGoat
  • Control Systems applied to consumer electronics, household appliances, and more specifically on Cooking Products (Ovens, Microwaves, Induction Cooktops) highly desirable.
  • Experience with Hardware Design, sensors, loads, microcontrollers
  • Familiarity with other tools and processes; Green belt six sigma / FMEA /5 why analysis
  • Experience with advanced sensing and controls; infrared, Humidity, Cameras, etc.) and rapid prototyping boards (ex. Arduino, Raspberry PI, etc…
