Function Overview

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer - Structures Design - Fatigue & Creep Testing will be a part of the structures subsystem team responsible for developing structural solutions for the next generation of refrigerator products. The emphasis will be on closing knowledge gaps using subsystem level prototype testing and Simulation Based Design (SBD) tools. This position will focus on the design of key refrigerator components for both static and dynamic load applications. The position will involve interactions with packaging team. The position will be responsible for leading structural testing of the refrigerator as per Whirlpool’s internal specification as well as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards.


Job Responsibilities

  • Work with structures team to design and test subsystem level prototypes and help in closing key knowledge gaps
  • Gain understanding of various joining technologies such as adhesives, metal welding for hermetic application
  • Get Design for reliability (DFR) proficiency, gain experience with developing reliability tests and predicting product life
  • Use Geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T) concepts while designing parts and assemblies
  • Work with SBD team and request simulation studies, provide design and structural inputs to simulation team and analyze simulation results to make design changes  
  • Familiarize with Whirlpool’s Design, verification planning and reliability (DVP&R), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Knowledge Gaps documents
  • Familiarize with Whirlpool’s refrigerator products and UL structural testing
  • Exercise set-based concurrent engineering practices
  • Work with cross-functional teams of Advanced Manufacturing, Simulation Based Design (SBD), Global Consumer Design (GCD), Procurement, Materials, etc. to deliver project targets
  • Summarize key findings in lean product development tools or design guides


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in designing components/assemblies for fatigue, creep, impact loading


Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical/structural engineering with emphasis on dynamic loading (fatigue, impact, drop testing)
  • Possess good root cause analysis skills, detailed oriented, ability to engage with cross-functional teams with ease
  • Certification in Geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Certification in Opex Black Belt
  • Experience with designing and testing of hermetic joints for reliability
