Sr. Manager, Legal, Environmental Health & Safety and Sustainability


Function Overview
Currently, we are seeking qualified candidates for the Senior Manager of Communications to support Whirlpool Corporation's global efforts related to Legal, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), as well as Sustainability. This organization is made up of over 500 team members in over 65 locations spanning four regions. This role supports and enables the company’s strategic imperatives aimed at keeping Whirlpool Corporation the leading major appliance manufacturer in the world while in constant pursuit of improving life at home. 
The Sr. Manager of Communications is a strategic partner to the global Legal, EHS and Sustainability team, and also partners and interacts with executive committee members across regions and functions to drive alignment to global standards and messaging. The position offers an exciting opportunity to be a problem solver, actively contribute to critical projects involving complex issues on a variety of fronts.  This role is responsible for developing engagement and communication strategies and plans to engage the organization through various communications and public policy formats, and track success of adopting and leveraging tools/standards, behaviors, and processes to drive a culture of health, safety and sustainability.


The successful candidate will:


  • be expected to engage with Whirlpool corporate communications and public affairs counterparts to effectively manage external facing communications, including the global sustainability report, public policy issues, legal matters and reputation issues
  • be a proactive problem solver with an adventurous spirit willing to delve into new subject areas while possessing the self confidence to influence vertically and horizontally


Job Responsibilities:

  • Communications and Employee Engagement: Create and deliver engagement strategies and innovative, two-way communication solutions that drive better alignment, understanding, embedment and dialog within the organization
  • Understand stakeholders, communication and engagement needs to shape a plan for connecting our employees to a common purpose, vision, strategy, and key priorities
  • Leverage standard processes and technology to plan and execute various types of communications and events (e.g., town hall meetings, employee-facing product shows, leader emails, leader/employee roundtables, videos, presentations, organizational announcements, etc.)
  • Serve as a communications and change management partner on strategic organizational initiatives
  • Deploy pulse surveys, reports and recommended actions, as appropriate
  • Be a proactive problem solver, someone with an adventurous spirit to delve into new subject areas while possessing the self confidence to influence vertically and horizontally
  • Create communication strategy/plans/material for external audiences, as appropriate
  • Cross-Functional and Global Collaboration:D  evelop necessary partnerships cross-functionally and globally to achieve strategy and outcomes. Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication channels with key teams, Whirlpool stakeholders, and others (vendors, partners, etc.) to ensure successful implementation
  • Work as part of a global team with colleagues from across several functions (Marketing, Manufacturing, Product Development, Procurement, etc.) as well as all regions including Corporate Center, the North American, Latin American, Asian and EMEA (Europe Middle East and Africa) regions, and global business leaders
  • Project & Change Management: Drive sustainable business outcomes through effective change management and communications efforts
  • Develop proactive, comprehensive project strategies and plans including a structured framework to engage key reviewers and stakeholder and align key activities and milestones with success metrics
  • Measure success of engagement and communications activities developed to drive engagement across multiple audiences and vehicles
  • Analyze and interpret employee data and feedback

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 7+ years of experience in a business communications role


Preferred Requirements:

  • Previous experience in an internal communication role for a global, public company
  • Master's degree in Communications, Organizational Psychology, Human Resources, or a related discipline preferred
  • Experience within business management, public policy, project management, communications/PR, change management, consulting, legal, and/or HR preferred
  • Experience with crisis, public relations and social media communications a plus
  • Strong analytical, organizational and decision-making skills
  • Understanding of business priorities, challenges, and direction to drive employee engagement through effective communications and desired outcomes through a robust strategy
  • Experience developing communications strategies and plans to drive change; experience with projects that include large scale transformation, organization, business process changes preferred
  • Track record of strong executive presence and ability to demonstrate credibility and diplomacy when managing key stakeholders at various levels, adapt quickly to a changing environment and manage multiple priorities and stakeholders
  • Ability to interact and connect with individuals at all levels of the organization. Understanding of the impact of decisions on various parts of the organization and ability to manage varying dynamics of the organization
  • Success developing innovative ideas, developing creative approaches to challenges and opportunities, and turning ideas into reality.
