This role in summary

The Senior Software Engineer is a versatile software developer that can lead the development of embedded software components for Home Appliances. This person will perform key implementation and system integration of complex HMI and IoT software components for Whirlpool’s smart and connected appliances. The Sr Software Engineer drives the system implementation with a strong understanding of software development methodologies, the latest development technologies and best practices and expertise in system design. A background in IoT, User Interface, User Experience and Human Machine Interfaces is an advantage.


This position is located in Southwest Michigan or Chicago, Illinois

Your responsibilities will include

  • Contribute to the software development and implementation of Whirlpool’s smart and connected IOT products and home appliances working in an Agile Scrum Team.
  • Drive software designs and decisions regarding system architecture spanning multiple functional areas including Appliance Operation, Connectivity and User Interface.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance for junior team members.
  • Keep pulse on emerging software technologies and approaches.
  • Apply development skills and state of the art industry solutions for embedded software and bring the best of these solutions to Whirlpool products.
  • Develop and integrate software using sound software development practices including continuous integration, nighty build & regression testing and test driven design
  • Adhere to coding standards and procedures.
  • Provide creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Participate in functional, technical, and code reviews.
  • Work in an Agile environment.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3+ years software development experience in an embedded environment
  • 1+ years of experience in software design with microcontrollers

Preferred skills and experiences

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • 3+ years of experience with professional software engineering practices over all aspects of software development life-cycle including writing requirements specifications, developing design guidelines and coding standards, performing code reviews, source code control, build systems, testing, release engineering and field support
  • Computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, operating systems, etc.
  • Experience with a variety of languages including C, JavaScript, Python and Shell Script
  • Experience in JavaScript programming and debugging
  • Knowledge of UI design methodologies and software for HMIs.
  •  IoT, WiFi, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and RESTful protocols
  • Network protocols and formats (HTTPS, MQTT, JSON, XML, etc)
  • Experience optimizing performance and memory usage on embedded systems
  • Software development tools such as Git, JIRA and Confluence
  • Experience with continuous integration and testing 
  • Knowledge of electronics, schematics and correlation with Software to drive the hardware.
  • Experience working in Agile and Waterfall SDLCs.
  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging of complex software systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • A collaborative attitude and strong desire to succeed as part of the team.
  • Self-motivated and a strong passion for learning
