This role in summary

 Whirlpool is seeking qualified candidates for a Model-Based Controls Design Engineer in Benton Harbor, MI in the Control Systems Department for Electronics and Electrical Systems Organization. This position will report to a senior manager and will be responsible to design and deliver algorithms using simulation-based techniques across multiple platforms.

Your responsibilities will include

  •  Work with engineers in the team to develop standard documentation for the algorithm architecture using SysML diagrams as applicable for every new project/algorithm. Collaborate with a cross-functional team for inputs.
  • Assist in decomposing system-level requirements to Software requirements using closed-loop simulation capabilities with plant models and or with experimental analysis using products.
  • Experience with modeling and tuning PID controller in multiple applications can model and develop logic using complex controls  ( MIMO, SISO, observer-based models, classical and digital controls )
  • Develop algorithms and test implementations using Matlab/Simulink.  Use a model-based software development approach that utilizes both graphical and traditional software development methods. 
  • Design digital and standard filters to perform signal conditioning of various sensors in different applications.
  • Generate C code from models using auto-code generation tools and configuration. Confident about C programming and embedded software/.  
  • Should be able to test/debug software using models and system hardware.   
  • Work closely with firmware engineers, system integrators, and product platform engineers to ensure algorithms meet the customers’ and products’ needs and requirements.  
  • Collaborating with cross-functional and cross-regional teams
  • Be able to run experimental activities in the lab (instrumentation, test, and data acquisition) in order to validate the algorithm’s capability and robustness.
  • Be able to assist the team to create automation in the modeling/ simulation and code generation domain is a plus. Using automation techniques in python or C or Matlab scripts.

Minimum requirements

  • Masters in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering with a focus on controls systems
  • 2+ years professional experience in controls algorithm development using Matlab/Simulink

Preferred skills and experiences

  • PhD in the area of Control Systems  
  • Simulink (2+ yrs) applied to Model Based Control Design V Process
  • Programming Languages: advanced C/C++ (Embedded C experience is also desired)
  • Controls Design and Estimators (ex. Machine learning based algorithms, Kalman filter, Model Predictive Control, Parameter Estimation, Advanced Estimators, etc…)
  • Plant modeling development with Modelica language and interface of modelica models with Simulink
  • Rapid prototyping techniques to validate controls (for instance: NI - Labview, DSpace systems, etc..)
  • Other tools and processes (ex.Green belt six sigma / Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) /5 why analysis/ )
