Benefit Program Manager Leave of Absence


Function Overview

The Global Leave Manager (GLM) serves as the subject matter expert on all leave of absence programs and provides backup support for management of the organization's other benefit plans. The global leave manger will take an innovative, holistic, and integrated approach to work-life strategies. This role is responsible for collaborating across service lines as well as other operational and functional areas.


This person will be responsible for delivering “high touch” people experiences related to leave matters, including the experience delivered during new hire onboarding communication of benefits, responding to leave related employee issues, and general work / life balance programs for the company.  This role is critical in executing ensuring compliance with all benefit regulatory and reporting matters, maintaining up-to-date benefit plan documents, firm leave policy documents, managing vendor relationships, and providing exceptional internal support across our organization.


Job Responsibilities

  • Become knowledgeable and supportive of the strategy and business priorities of the organization and ensure alignment of leave management strategy to those of the company
  • Uses data and metrics to make critical decisions; identifies patterns and reports findings & trends
  • Supports the execution of Whirlpool's strategy by providing leadership, creative vision and project management in the design, implementation and administration of an integrated leave strategy that includes traditional leave benefits as well as innovative strategies like wellbeing, mindfulness and work-life integration strategies that support the “whole self” and align with and support our employment brand proposition
  • Create and own strategy and process (in conjunction with HR Operations), including family medical leave act, short term and long term disability (FMLA/STD/LTD)  and Workers’ Compensation leaves and claims, to ensure compliance with all protected and non-protected leave requirements
  • Responsible for processes related to all leave policies, retirement plans, and employee benefit plans process
  • Coordinate quarterly vendor review process
  • Coordinate root cause problem resolution with other functions including corporate safety, manufacturing operations, HR Operations and other groups as necessary
  • Manages plan compliance risk management and other regulatory compliance matters
  • Partners with operations service delivery leaders to ensure effective and consistent messaging of programs to partners, employees, and new hires
  • Manages, mentors, and coaches staff within his/her scope
  • Ensures quality in the delivery of all products
  • Implement effective communication and education strategies with leadership and employees regarding holistic work/life solutions and total rewards aligning with the employment brand
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations and firm policies surrounding leaves of absence
  • Ensures competitiveness of leave policies while driving towards top quartile performance in overall cost
  • Continually evaluate the effectiveness of the leave programs, practices, and procedure
  • Responsible for vendor’s process and lead analysis on vendor performance and selection of new vendors


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in HR or related field
  • 7+ years in HR Benefits
  • 5+ years in a strategic health and welfare, leave management role


Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s degree HR or related field
  • PHR or SPHR certification
  • Experience in implementing leave management strategies
  • Experience in defining and implementing detailed leave management business processes
  • Strong verbal and written communication & presentation skills
  • A reputation for discretion, integrity, judgment, responsiveness, strong attention to detail and common sense
  • Experience functioning as an leave manager, ideally in a matrixed environment within a services industry a plus
  • Experience in managing, mentoring and developing a team of health & welfare practitioners
  • Proficient in Google apps (Google docs, etc.)
  • Ability to thrive in a culture that is collaborative, service-oriented, and consultative a pragmatic approach to business partnership and operations
  • Experience in prioritization and negotiation with demonstrated ability to be effective in supporting multiple business leaders/ partners working across different business units
  • Operationally focused with the ability to think creatively and deliver tactically
  • Metrics-focused with ability and history of using analytics to solve problems and develop solutions
