Advanced Process Development Senior Engineer, Bulk Material Handling


This role in summary
The process engineer will serve as the Global Advanced Manufacturing Engineering representative working with the Advanced Development Innovation Engineering Team (ADI) in developing a manufacturing solution and plan for a New Advanced Home Appliances Project,  as well as aligning these plans with Whirlpool manufacturing facilities.


This person will address and close Manufacturing Knowledge gaps ahead of design release to support product roadmap execution, Create Bills of Process (BoP’s) in area of expertise, Create and Drive Agile Manufacturing approaches.


This person will establish, document, and update the best processing approach for  Material Handling equipment, communicating globally to plants, address and close Manufacturing Knowledge gaps ahead of design release to support product roadmap execution, while creating process technology roadmaps that drive Agile manufacturing. 


Your responsibilities will include

  • Communications - 
    • Acts as an interface between the Advanced Engineering teams and Global Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
    • Established and maintains clear communication links with the Advanced Development Innovation Engineering,  Materials and Procurement Teams. 
    • Knowledgeable of the 5 year product plan, 5+ Asset life plan and Factory master plans for the category 
    • Work closely with suppliers, integrators and real estate for full process solutions.
    • Communicate and understand Process technology Roadmaps, Process Technology development charts and Process technology opportunity sheets.
    • Develop communication plans and recommendations for process technologies leveraging Agile Mfg concepts based on established priority.
    • Develop daily concurrent engineering.
  • Process technology development - 
    • Based upon established Platform and Plant needs, work with internal and external process partners resolving knowledge gaps.
    • Participate very early in the product creation process providing guidance on asset cost, process approach, product design impacts from manufacturing.
    • Hands on development, running builds, tests, tuning and debugging experimental equipment.
    • Define a solution with proposal layout, process and equipment for product launch.
    • Develops and maintains Process technology roadmap and plan to resolve assigned process knowledge gaps, leveraging GAME processes (PTO, PTR, etc) , resolving manufacturability issues.
    • Knowledgeable of alternative process approaches
    • Align deliverables and output of Global Advanced Manufacturing Engineering with process partners, Platform and Manufacturing Leads.
    • Support product leadership goals by driving the use of Agile processing into the platforms, regions and plants
    • Develop new and modified technologies, materials, equipment, tooling and processing techniques, defining standards.
    • Use of Manufacturing System Design Tools (MSD).
  • Knowledge transfer and Common Manufacturing Processes - 
    • Acts as the overall Global Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (GAME) Subject Matter Expert for the category and area.
    • Provide and document manufacturing best practices and provide knowledge transfer resulting in consistency of processes leveraging the GAME BoP process.
    • Deep understanding of processes with the category via Process technology scanning and able to strategically visualize benefits in support of Product Leadership needs. 
    • Drives global consistency of processes within the category (BoP compliance)
    • Early and new project development
    • Support  feasibility assessments for various manufacturing scenarios that spread across multiple regions and plants with multiple platforms. 
    • Assist in driving capital efficiency 
  • Coordinates category specific Agile Technical Focus Team (TFT) activity
  • Component level design support for new to the world products 
  • Create/Maintain Process Technology Opportunity forms 
  • Create/Maintain Assigned Process Technology Roadmap, Process Technology development status, BoP documentation
  • Agile Mfg approach for key processes within the category
  • Understanding of Platform product plans, Life asset plan, Plant Factory Master Plans (FMP’s)  communicating to Global Technical Teams, driving knowledge gap resolution through best practice transfer and new technology investigation and communicating appropriately.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 20-30% of the time and be able to work in and travel by all forms of transportation to all of our manufacturing locations and supply base. We are a global company with process partners in but not limited to locations in North, Central and South America, Asia (India, China, Korea, etc), Pacific Rim, Eastern and Western Europe.


Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 5+ years of manufacturing experience including designing, building, buying, executing and installing equipment or an Associates Degree in Engineering and 10+ years of manufacturing experience including designing, building, buying, executing and installing equipment
  • Experience developing and documenting process standard, Machine specifications, Process Failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), and using Statistical (Opex)  tools.

  • Ability to influence and drive consensus
  • Self starter, Self-confident and driver of change with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in large multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Physically capable and mentally willing to be in a hands on pilot factory environment.
  • Excellent manufacturing process technology acumen, especially within the Refrigeration products family
  • Excellent product knowledge, experience in product design a plus
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility and build trust with a demonstrated history of gaining cross-functional and cross-cultural alignment
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, teamwork  and change management skills
  • Experience in capital planning and acquisition
  • Understanding of Manufacturing System Design tools (MSD).
  • Experience in fields such as Tire manufacture, Mining, Medical pill material management or Food is a plus
  • Experience with bulk material and powder handling is a plus.
