Lead Project Engineer

Function Overview

Whirlpool is looking for a Product Development Engineer for our Dry unit team. The engineer will be responsible for global laundry mechanical structures, sealing and air ducts/channels subsystem deliverables, including development, execution, verification and validation, working with global cross functional teams during various phases of projects and across various technologies such as structural mechanics, plastic design, sheet metal design, foam/rubber seals, rollers, bearings and dynamics of the components.  


Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure high quality of team deliverables on New Product Development process by delivering projects on time, cost and quality targets for the Laundry business with a focus on structural components (drums/baskets, plastic and metal ducts, air and water tight seals) and physics understanding (Dynamics, thermodynamics, air flow).

  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously and help the team drive them to implementation using the project management tools by closely working with design, product approval, manufacturing, assembling and interface teams.

  • Mentoring during project about concept  development, design creation, concept evaluation & selection, verification & validation and implementing into production.

  • Coaching on fine-tuning of concepts (Hand calculations, material selection, design for manufacturing/Design for Assembly)

  • Drive, document and manage module-level requirements, functional decomposition of requirements, success criterias, Generic FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), and work with stakeholders on verification and validation definitions. 

  • Drive and influence team designs using simple Six Sigma or OPEX - Operational Excellence Tools (Thought Map, Product Map, Process Map, DOE’s, COV’s), apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) stack up, and perform drawing reviews.

  • Work with System Architects and SME to develop performance models and correlate them with physical testing to assure the correct function of them to reduce timing on testing and increase predictability for changes.

  • Work with the product approval and validation groups to help the team on defining component level success criterias and test procedures for new designs during project execution.

  • Lead and coordinate subsystem roadmaps and strategy plans together with module owners for future plans (Complexity reduction, Innovation and Mega projects) around specific attributes targets.

  • Administrative functions: Training, Team Building, NPI and Cost quality project Coordination, etc.

  • Availability for travel; regional (may be once a quarter on average) / international (may be required)


Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Mechatronic / Automobile Engineering or related field

  • 8+ years of experience in product development in related field

  • Proficiency in English language (Read, write and speak)

  • Sound structural knowledge and hands on experience in problem solving

  • Hands on experience in any CAD tools (Creo is preferred)

  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple projects parallely

  • Indirect people report experience.

  • Result oriented

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.  This includes the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of Whirlpool’s organization


Preferred Requirements:

  • Master degree in Mechanical / Production / Combustion or related field

  • Problem-solving approach with OPEX (Operational Excellence) or Six Sigma certification

  • Project Management certification (PMP) is an added advantage

  • Experience in the selection and application of materials for component design

  • Experience facilitating effective communication across teams

  • Experience launching a product in the market

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a matrix environment.
